India is a land of gurus and mahatmas. No other country in this world can match the level of euphoria and bliss, with which we Indians celebrate our festivals. We are very much sentimental towards our caste, culture and religion. Every year we celebrate this festival of Vijayadashami with full enthusiasm. This festival also kicks off the preparations for the most widely celebrated festival in this country – Diwali. It characterizes the triumph of Lord Ram over Ravan, the victory of good over evil as we call it.
Ravana – The Great Scholar
Ravan is always portrayed as devilry and demonic, very few people know that he was a devotee of Lord Shiva. His ten heads symbolize his knowledge of six Shastras and four Vedas. Although sometimes he is shown with only 9 heads because he sacrificed one head to convince Lord Shiva. There are many Shiva temples in South where Ravana is worshipped. Although he grabbed Lanka forcibly from Kuber, he was well versed all the laws and ruled his kingdom very nicely because he was a good administrator. Just because of his egotism and greed, he had to sacrifice everything and even his own life.
Today’s Scenario
Every year we burn effigies of Ravan on the occasion of Dussehra. In fact, preclusions are done 9 days prior to the main festival. Every year we take a pledge to say no to corruption, greed, jealousy, anger and ego. But are we actually employing all these pledges that we take every year? People are more focused towards earning money. They have forgotten their moral values. This transformation from optimism to pessimism is somehow affecting the youth of this country. Over the past few decades, we have seen many cases where students get involved drugs and various other bad habits. How can be hope for a bright future of this country if we do not empower the youth of this country with right knowledge and wisdom?
The Solution – Knowledge is Power
Everyone talks big, but there are very few people in this country who take the initiatives to spread humanity, happiness and knowledge. With the advent of the internet, we can access a wide range of information online. But the real problem lies in the fact that we are not using the information which is available to us. We only complain about things that we do not have. Moral values play a very big role in shaping the character and personality of an individual. Therefore, if these values are taught to children at an early stage, it can play a tremendous role in transforming the children to become better human beings. They can learn to differentiate between good and bad, right and wrong. There’s so much positivity we can take from Ravan’s life story. It’s just a matter of perspective that we need to develop.
